The self doubt monster! I created this illustration for Bob Schwartz, a talented writer and teacher in Tampa. He’s helping coach a young slam poet team, and he wanted an image to capture the “Inner Critic which often smothers creativity with its judgemental voice.” That phrase immediately made think of working alone late at night, and hating everything I’m creating. Those perceived failures start to pile up. One antidote I’ve found for myself is sharing my work more often. It is a really cathartic experience, and it’s incredibly helpful to hear other people’s reactions. This week I went to a regular event in Jacksonville called the “Morning Leak”, where creative people just share projects they are working on. I was a little anxious about sharing at first, but it turned out to be a great experience. I got great feedback, and I was really energized by seeing other’s people’s work and thought process. So I’m learning to put my work out there even if it’s not perfect.
