I’m working on writing and illustrating a noir mystery based on Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Here are two images from my first draft. Two important lessons I’ve learned from the experience so far:
- It is really helpful to print out a physical dummy book early on. You can print and fold it yourself or print it at a place like Kinkos or Staples. I’d recommend printing it at full scale, even if the sketches are really rough. I decided to make a lot of changes once I was flipping through my book dummy.
- Don’t invest too much time into any one image early on. I’ve decided to entirely scrap a couple of the images I’ve spent the most time on already. I’ve had some better ideas for the story, and I have to discard several illustrations I’ve already done.
